The Gala Concert and the 90th Anniversary of PLIVA's Successful Business Operations: A Half-Million Kuna Donated to the Division of Phoniatrics of the University Hospital Centre Zagreb
The music event of the year, the concert by the Spanish tenor Placido Domingo and his guests, accompanied by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Eugene Kohn, which was held in the Zagreb’s Arena Hall on Friday, 21 October, overwhelmed the audience.
The concert by the famous Placido Domingo, who holds only about ten gala concerts per year, also had a charitable purpose. PLIVA, as the sponsor of this concert, initiated the "Voice for Health" charitable action. The organizers donated a part of the funds raised by each ticket sold to this charitable action, and PLIVA, as a partner in this project, doubled this amount. The cheque for a half-million kuna was donated to the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Division of Phoniatrics, for scientific and professional improvements and for the further advancement of diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation procedures. By donating the funds PLIVA marked its 90th anniversary of successful performance in the best way possible and once more showed its care for the communities in which it operates.
Domingo and his guests, American sopranos Angel Blue and Micaela Oeste, and the Croatian singer Tony Cetinski, received standing ovation from an enthusiastic audience after performing the pieces by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Franz Lehar and many others. As the second part of the concert was dedicated to popular melodies, the repertoire mainly included arias from musicals, operettas, and zarzuelas, and culminated with an encore, in which Domingo and his guests sang "Besame mucho", "O sole mio", "Over the Rainbow" and other classics. Wishing a happy 140th anniversary to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Domingo thanked the organizers and the concert participants, and asked the audience "not to forget them".
